Prom season is around the corner which means it’s almost time to put on your fancy prom dress and celebrate the night away with your friends. In addition to your outfit you’ll need fabulous makeup. In this post I’m sharing the hottest prom 2023 makeup tips and trends.
Prom makeup trend #1 – Less is more
A huge trend this year when it comes to makeup is: less is more. In years past we would cake on heavy foundation, over the top smokey eyes and the list goes on.
I have been a professional makeup artist for close to 20 years now and I have never seen such a huge trend shift when it comes to really embracing our natural beauty and skin. Thanks to celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez minimalist makeup looks have taken over the beauty space.

Foundation:
To embrace the less is more trend you want to use products that deliver sheer coverage and hydration.
We want to even out our skin tone but still keep it looking fresh. This trend is hugely influenced by celebrities like Hailey Bieber as mentioned above. Avoid any foundations that have the words matte and full coverage on the label. These formulas will look very cakey and heavy on the skin,
Instead look for foundations that have the words hydrating, buildable coverage and skin like finish on the label.
My Product recommendation:
Rimmel London Kind and Free Skin Tint.

Why I recommend it:
- Moisturizes and perfects skin for a fresh, healthy-looking glow
- Infused with skin loving ingredients an anti-oxidant complex of vitamin e, pro vitamin b5 and aloe vera
- Lightweight, dewy finish gives a healthy glow instantly & all-day long hydration
- Packaging made with recycled materials
- Certified by Cruelty Free International
Prom makeup trend #2 – Glossy lips
Much like the sheer textured foundations that are trending this year glossy lips are all the rage.
Think hydration and sheer washes of colour versus long wearing opaque lipsticks. I personally love this trend for prom because a glossy texture is so much easier to reapply throughout the evening and your lips won’t feel dry and uncomfortable.
My Product Recommendation:
QUO Beauty Lip Plumping Butter

Why I recommend it:
- If you want a hint of colour for your lips, here’s a great find from Quo Beauty at Shoppers Drug Mart.
- This Plumping Lip Butter gives you the best of all worlds: it’s a luxurious balm that melts instantly onto your lips, leaving a touch of colour and a dewy finish. It also plumps, hydrates and conditions your lips, with 8 pretty shades to match any prom outfit!
- The formula is vegan and cruelty free.
Prom makeup trend # 3 – My lash but better.
Although natural makeup looks are in this year, it is prom and we do want to take it up a notch.
You can do this by adding a strip of false lashes. This will enhance your natural lashes and make your eyes pop.
My Product Recommendation:
Ardell Insta-Lift Lashes
Why I recommend them:
- The Insta Lift lashes create a flaunt-worthy flare that instantly elevates your eye contours to create a perfect fox eye.
- These lashes are made from cruelty-free synthetic fibers with tapered tips
- Designed with an invisiband to give your eyes the utmost comfort while providing a seamless, dream-like look.
- Price: $7.97 at Walmart
Talking about false lashes here are my top tips when it comes to prom makeup.
Tip 1 – Always practice your look ahead of time.
I can not express how important this is. Make sure you are comfortable applying lashes, that you feel confident with what you are doing and how you look prior to the big day. This will alleviate so much stress.
Tip 2- Prep and set your skin.
Use a primer prior to applying makeup and use a setting powder to set it once your makeup is on. This will keep your makeup intact and looking fresher for longer.I also recommend bringing your setting powder along with you for the evening for touching up if need be.
Primer recommendation:
Covergirl Trublend Primers
Setting powder recommendation:
Rimmel London Stay Matte Setting Powder
