Makeup Brushes for Beginners

One of the most common issues my clients have when it comes to their makeup routine is makeup brushes. As a professional makeup artist I can absolutely agree that it is overwhelming. With so many to choose from it becomes impossible to know what to buy and which to use for different products. I am so happy to be spilling the tea on makeup brushes. Let’s get into makeup brushes for beginners!

Makeup brushes for beginners

Here are 7 makeup brushes everyone needs in their collection. From beginner to pro these are the core brushes that you can do almost everything with.

  1. Concealer Brushit cosmetics heavenly luxe brush.

For concealer you want a brush that has a rounded tip. You also want to look for a dual fibre brush this means the brush hairs are made up from natural hair and synthetic. The natural hair fibres give a flawless air brush finish while the synthetic element to the top of the bristles ensure that cream products don’t get stuck in the natural hairs.

The rounded tip versus a flat concealer brush allows for an easier blend, and ensures that the concealer is distributed evenly. It also prevents our concealer from creasing and getting caught in fine lines.

My go to brush for years has been the iT Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Brush. It makes blending concealer and foundation so easy!

It’s also dual ended which means I only need this one brush for my concealer and foundation 🙂

2. Foundation Brush

This will not come as a surprise but when looking for a foundation brush that will give you the most flawless application. Look for something that has the same qualities as the concealer brush just bigger so that you can spread your foundation evenly.

My go to brush for years has been the iT Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Brush. As mentioned above, it makes blending concealer and foundation so easy!

3. Cream Blush Brush

Another must have from iT Cosmetics is their Heavenly Luxe Cream Blush brush. It’s a cream-blush brush that easily blends and diffuses your favorite cream blushes for the perfect application every time.

It’s a dual fibre brush which as I discussed above is ideal for cream products. You can use this sort of  brush for all your cream products – contour, blush and highlight. It delivers a seamless blend. You don’t have to worry about your cream products looking patchy or streaky.

4. Powder Blush Brush

For our powder blush (this brush can also be used for loose powder, and setting powders). Look for something that has longer softer fibres than your foundation brush. Back in the day these fibres would be natural hair – typically horse or goat but nowadays companies and consumers are opting for synthetic fibres that mimic natural hair.

This natural hair texture is ideal for powder products because they pick up the perfect amount of product and the fluffiness of the fibres disperses the powder perfectly.

My top tip when picking a blush brush is to make sure that it isn’t too big for your cheek. If your blush brush is too big, product will end up in places you don’t want it and blending will become difficult!

My favourite is the eco tool precision blush brush. It is the perfect size, blends effortlessly and is inexpensive.

5. Fluffy Eye Shadow Brush

If you want to up your eye makeup game you need to get this brush! It is a need not a want, trust me on this 😉

A fluffy eyeshadow brush will help you blend your powder eyeshadow like a pro. Go for a medium brown or taupe eyeshadow and “wind shield wiper” it in the crease of your eye. Your eyes will pop because this creates dimension instantly. For a smokier look apply a deeper brown tone.

Quo Beauty Fluffy Eye Shadow Brush:

This particular fluffy eye shadow brush is my favourite! You will achieve a professional looking eyeshadow application every time! It has a tapered shape with a soft point for targeted application, perfect for blending shadow into crease of eyelid. The densely packed fibers smoothly distribute  shadows for a beautiful finish.

6. Shader Eye Shadow Brush

To apply shimmer and cream shadows to the eyelid grab a shader brush. This sort of brush has smooth edges which allows for maximum product pick up. Start by applying your cream or shimmer shadow to the centre of your lid and blend left to right for the most gorgeous looking application,

The Quo Beauty HD Shadow intensifier is perfect for this! With densely packed and angled fibers, this brush intensifies powder and cream eyeshadow by maximizing product pickup and placement.

7. Angled Eye Liner Brush

I love to do a smokey liner look on myself and my clients. Not only is it quick and easy but it’s super trendy.

To achieve this look you need an angled eye liner brush. Because it’s so small you can create sharp lines and get into the inner corners of your eyes. You can use your liner brush in gel textures,  powder shadows and creams.

You can also use it to fill in your brows.

Quo Beauty’s Winged Liner brush is ideal for creating gorgeous wings and brows. It’s a uniquely angled liner brush with steep wing shape.

These brushes are all you need to create beautiful makeup looks. Once you have mastered these, then you can go ahead and add more to your collection if you feel you want too.

I hope you found this article about makeup brushes for beginners helpful.
