Makeup Expiration Guide

We are heading into spring which means it’s time to shed the layers of winter clothing and upgrade our beauty products. While we are at it let’s do some spring cleaning and check the expiration dates on our skincare and makeup. In this post, I am sharing my makeup expiration guide along with some top tips so that you know what to toss and what to keep when it comes to beauty products.

Now that we are shifting into spring there’s no better time to check the expiration dates on our products. Let’s update our cosmetics to match the weather and our lifestyle.  I’m here to guide us on what to keep, toss and invest in this spring!

TIP #1 CREAM MAKEUP PRODUCTS – Expires at the 18 month mark

FOUNDATION:

If you have any cream products (foundations and concealers ) that are over 18 months old it’s time to toss them out.

Older cream products lose moisture making them look dry and cakey when applying them onto the skin.

If your foundation is over 2 years old it’s definitely time to toss it. It will probably look separated and the colour will have oxidized. Keep in mind that your skin type may change over time too. Something to consider when replacing foundation and concealer.

My Upgrade Recommendation:

Rimmel Londons New Kind & Free Moisturizing Skin Tint Foundation

Rimmel Kind and Free Moisturising skin tint foundation.

The NEW KIND & FREE™ Moisturizing Skin Tint is made with 100% vegan ingredients. Stuff that’s simply good for you & good for the planet. Rimmel’s Kind & Free Moisturizing Skin Tint gives you an instant healthy glow. The tint is infused with an antioxidant vitamin complex. And it evens skin-tone for a blurring effect!

TIP #2 POWDER MAKEUP PRODUCTS – Expires at the 2-3 year mark

BLUSH:

Powder-based products start to deteriorate after the 2-year mark as they lose all of their moisture and become very chalky.
Powder products can also become very difficult to blend and look patchy on the skin.

Opt for a new blush that is close to your natural lip colour. This is the best way to pick out your perfect blush shade.

My Upgrade Recommendation:

EYESHADOW:

Eyeshadows become difficult to apply and blend when they start to turn. Go ahead and invest in a new neutral eyeshadow palette so that you can achieve beautiful blended eyeshadow looks.

TIP #3 SKINCARE – Expires at the 18 month mark

Skincare products will no longer be effective after the 18 month mark.

PRO TIP Upgrades: Active ingredients in our skincare dwindle over time, if your skincare products have been on your vanity for 18 months+ they most likely aren’t going to be effective anymore. They can also start to turn and start to smell really bad.
My Upgrade Recommendations:
MOISTURISER:

A true multi-tasker that tackles the top 3 skin aging concerns: hydration, wrinkles, & radiance.

Hope in a jar glowing moisturizer.
SERUM:
Philosophy biome-balancing glow serum.

A biome-balancing glow serum. clinically proven to provide skin barrier protection.

EYE CREAM:
eye revival serum in-cream.

An eye serum in cream that tackles the first signs of aging.

Tip #4 LIPSTICK – Expires at the 2 year mark

Lipsticks lose their moisture and can start to grow mould after 2 years. Time to invest in some new ones 🙂 Glossy  lipsticks are all the rage now.

My Upgrade Recommendation: NYX Shine loud, High Shine Lip Colour

NYX Shine Loud lipstick.

An Ultra-pigmented high-shine lip colour, with up to 16hr no transfer wear.

TIP #5 MASCARA Expires at the 3 month mark

You should ideally be switching out your mascara every 3 months. Mascara starts to get extremely dry and flaky after the 3 month mark which means it will no longer glide onto your lashes and provide you with the results you are looking for. Mascara typically contains talc as a result once the moisture starts to evaporate it becomes impossible to use.

My Upgrade Recommendation: NYX On The Rise Volume Liftscara

This ultra-pigmented formula catches and coats lashes in matte black color for quick-charge lift and volume in just a few strokes. Featuring an innovative applicator shape and an elastomer brush head, the part-hourglass, part-rounded brush delivers high drama, intense volume and serious elevation.

    Hi Shira!

You did a makeup consultation for me a few years ago. Well, I pretty much stopped wearing makeup during the pandemic. I need a refresher. Do you do this? Hope you and your daughter are doing well!

On todays chch beauty segment you were recommending sunscreens. Why did you just constantly say for the mamas and dads. A lot of people don’t have and can’t have children. Theses products are for everyone. Please be considerate of all people and families and say men, women and teens. I actually find it very offensive. Just because you have just had a baby so many women can’t! My family knows this first hand.

Hey bette I am so sorry you found this offensive I definitely didn’t mean for it to come across that way. I definitely understand that some women have a hard time conceiving my baby is my 6th pregnancy after many years of struggle and loss. The segment topic that was agreed upon was sun care for the whole family. I always do my very best to be inclusive and sensitive in my work. I do apologize if the sun care topic was triggering 🙁
