Women who are impacted by Psoriasis can rest assured that wearing makeup is not a problem at all ! According to Dermatologist Dr. Meilnda Gooderham, makeup is absolutely ok to wear for women with psoriasis.

Before we talk about makeup tips and Psoriasis:
I’s very important to understand that the impact of living with Psoriasis, is not only physical and superficial but emotional and psychological too.
The most basic day to day tasks can be impacted when someone has Psoriasis. I was shocked to hear how ruthless and harsh people can be. Psoriasis sufferers are often times bullied and told that they have a skin disease due to being “dirty”. This couldn’t be further from the truth and is absolutely not the case.
Psoriasis has nothing to do with personal hygiene. It is an autoimmune disease that makes the skin produce 10x more cells than an average person. This leads to calloused dry areas, the visible red and irritated skin we see on individuals who have this disease.
In a nutshell Psoriasis is no joke. It’s uncomfortable, itchy and takes a major toll on confidence. Psoriasis sufferers often times start avoiding social gatherings, vacations. Because of it’s isolating nature people with psoriasis end up with severe bouts of depression and anxiety due a condition that is heavily stigmatized. Women have an especially hard time if Psoriasis occurs on the face where makeup and skincare become impacted.
So what exactly is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease which causes the immune system to send out faulty messages, which makes skin cells multiply 10x faster than normal. Hence the hard and flaky appearance. This accelerated build up of skin cells puts the body into overdrive and causes the inflammation that appears on the surface of the skin.
Who can get psoriasis ?
Anyone can get it and it is genetic.
It effects both men and women, can strike at any age and 1 million people in Canada have psoriasis. Globally effecting 125 million individuals.
How do we treat psoriasis ?
There are 3 main treatment options depending on the severity of the psoriasis and what the patient responds to best.
- There are topical
- Light therapy
- And oral or injectable medication options
Treatment is prescribes based on severity and how much psoriasis there is on the body.
Other health concerns linked to psoriasis are arthritis and inflammation of the joints.
Over all Psoriasis is not fun and there are millions of people around the world living with it. Raising awareness to what this disease actually is, is so important. As a makeup artist and beauty expert I am so happy that I now know more about psoriasis. I was able to ask Dr. Melinda specific questions about skin care, makeup and psoriasis.

Skincare tips for women with Psoriasis:
As far as skincare goes you can use anything that makes you feel good. The key is to take care of your skin and keep it happy and hydrated.
Products with retinols are highly recommended, here are my recommendations:
Neostrata Comprehensive Retinol Overnight Serum

Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Retinol Capsules

The one thing that is not recommended for those with psoriasis is exfoliating too often. And you should always steer clear of harsh granular formulations. If you do want to exfoliate use something very subtle these two options are outstanding and will not irritate your skin.
