Skin care while wearing a mask.

Face masks have now become a part of our ‘new normal’ – and as the temperature and humidity rise, our skin won’t be getting the air it needs. Increased humidity can lead to an overproduction of oil and create redness, irritation and breakouts. Here are my skin care tips for keeping our skin happy and healthy while wearing a mask.

Tip # 1 – use an overnight lip treatment:

Redifine Lip Renewing Seum

Use an overnight lip treatment to make sure your lips are hydrated. We aren’t able to reapply lip balm while wearing a face mask. Avoid dry lip discomfort by treating your lips overnight.

My favourite overnight lip treatment is the Rodan and Fields Redefine Lip Renewing Serum.

Each gel-filled capsule visibly smooths lips + reduces the appearance of wrinkles while helping retain natural moisture. Apply your lip serum before going to bed and wake up to hydrated, moisturized lips that will feel comfortable all day while you wear your mask.

More reasons to love this product:

  • Retains natural moisture in lips and visibly smooths lip texture
  •  Helps combat wrinkles, Fine lines, Dryness that occur on your lips and mouth area.

Tip #2 – invest in a blemish stick:

Bacteria builds up pretty quickly under a face covering. This can lead to more blemishes around the chin area. Invest in a blemish stick that is high in salicylic acid to treat new breakouts on the skin.

My favourite one is the Dermalogica Active Clearing Age Bright Spot Fader.

This two-in-one spot treatment reduces the appearance of active breakouts and post-breakout marks. Salicylic Acid works to clear breakouts, while Niacinamide and Hexylresorcinol work synergistically to fade post-breakout marks, improving uneven skin tone. AGE Bright™ Complex reduces visible skin aging and helps prevent over-drying.

  • Works quickly and effectively !
  • Apply directly upon first sign of breakout.
  • Reapply twice a day until spot fades.

Tip #3 – exfoliate your skin:

Neutrogena Bright Boost Resurfacing Polish

Congestion on the skin is a concern when wearing face coverings for extended periods of time as the skin can’t breathe. Exfoliate your skin 2-3 times a week to slough off build up on the skin.

The Neutrogena Bright Boost Resurfacing Micro Polish is my go to because:

  • Exfoliates skin with 3x the polishing power of a normal scrub
  • Removes skin-aging dullness with gentle polishing particles
  • Contains Mandelic and Glycolic acids for visibly brighter smoother skin

Tip # 4 – Sheer SPF Formulas:

Just because you’re wearing a mask doesn’t mean that harmful UV rays are unable to penetrate it. Still focus on wearing SPF all over the face to keep it safe from the sun. Some SPF’s out there can feel heavy on the skin this is a concern I hear time and time again. My clients are constantly asking me about sheer weightless textured SPF for their face.

This is especially essential when wearing a mask.

The Aveeno Sensitive Skin SPF 50 Ultra-Light Mineral Sunscreen is ideal !

  • Made with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, this ultra-light liquid sunscreen absorbs instantly and layers invisibly under makeup
  • Nourishing oat helps lock in moisture and strengthens the skin barrier
  • Suitable for sensitive skin, oil free (wont clog pores), fast absorbing and sweat/water resistant for up to 80 minutes
  • $15.99-$19.99 CAD at mass retailers (in stores and online)

Tip #5 – Use a water based gel Moisturizer:

My top pick is the Hydractiv Creme Gel from Jouviance. It’s a lightweight water based formula that is deeply nourishing and non greasy. It instantly absorbs into the skin and calms dehydrated skin.
